So as I approached a stop sign or began a coast downhill, I could fiddle the paddles to set an appropriate amount of regen. Rather, the paddles are used to toggle between three levels of regenerative braking. Paddle shifters are standard - odd for a car that only features two single-speed transmissions - but they're not used to change gears. This sound "enhancement" feels totally unnecessary. Sport mode also pipes electronically generated faux engine noise into the cabin when accelerating, which just draws attention to the aforementioned off-putting sound. The Sport setting gives a gratifying sharpening of the throttle response, but there is a fuel economy cost. There's not much difference between Normal and Econ - the default setting is already pretty eco-tuned - and EV is of limited use outside parking lots and driveways given the Insight's small battery pack.

The Insight features four drive modes: Normal, Sport, Econ and EV. More importantly, it promises fuel economy that's right up there with the best of its class. Overall, the Insight returns solid performance - especially at city speeds where the e-motor is in its element. Like an EV, however, the Insight tends to run out of steam at high speeds, where it can feel a tad underpowered. By the end of my second day of testing, I only noticed the engine sound weirdness under hard acceleration. It's really nice, and also really awkward, but it doesn't take long to get used to this sensation. In other words, around town, the Insight sounds laggy, but feels responsive and torquey like an EV. However, the e-motor is way more responsive than a traditional continuously variable transmission could ever hope to be, so you don't feel any lag between your toe on the pedal and what you sense at the seat of your pants. The note just sort of climbs and then hangs discordantly. You press the gas pedal and hear the engine rev, but it's out of sync with the resulting acceleration. However, their reliability within the past 2 or 3 years has improved from what it was in 2016-2018.Because the gasoline engine isn't connected to the wheels, there's an odd, CVT-like effect to the drive. My parents and I have been Honda people for quite a long time, and we can say that even though Honda is still reliable, their reliability isn't quite what it used to be. The base model, LX, of this model year is very lacking when it comes to safety features, so I would recommend at least going for the EX or EX-L. The transmission can be a little jumpy, which is to be expected as it is a CVT, but I don't mind it as I get really good gas mileage, and the car is quite peppy and you'll have no issues getting up to speed on the highway, which it is hard to find both of those characteristics in a compact economy vehicle. It's an economy commuter car, and you can't really expect a whole lot of luxurious comfort from that. However, the car rides very well, albeit there is a bit of road noise, and the seats are okay. I have ran into several other issues that were quite minor, one of them being the gauge cluster quite literally turned off while driving and I couldn't see how fast I was going.

The engine and transmission have been very dependable. I ended up replacing the radio because I was tired of the stock head unit that just wasn't very functional. The interior, however, feels a little cheap and there are quite a few rattles that are annoying. I love the sparkle of the paint that my dark blue Honda Civic has, and it has held up very well. I love the styling on the exterior, however I feel like the interior styling is a tad "out-of-date," even for 2018. Have had this car for almost 2 years now.
